First big trip of the season – gone for a month

September 15, 2008

The field season has begun, and I’m starting it off with what I think will be a great, long trip.
I start out spending a few weeks in the southwest corner of Western Australia, collecting mayflies. For the first few days, one of my colleagues will be with me, but I will be alone for about a week, which will give me a chance to check out the Indian Ocean. Then, I am meeting up with several people from Wodonga in Mandurah, WA to attend the annual conference of the Australian Society for Limnology. At the conference I will give a talk on the presence of 6 cryptic species in what we previously thought was one species.

After the conference, I fly straight to Sydney to meet up with my parents, who will be visiting for a few weeks. We’ll spend a few days in Sydney, touring the harbour area, maybe visit the zoo or the aquarium, etc. Then, it’s up to northern Queensland, where we’ll be saying in Port Douglas. We don’t have anything too definite planned while we’re up there, but will certainly check out the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the rainforest, as well as probably spend some time lounging on the beach.

For the last few days of my parents trip, we’ll spend time in Wodonga, relaxing. All up, the trip will be over 10,000km, and just shy of a month.
